The competition we announced for the Golly±Bossy Hostel souvenirs is over! The panel of judges sent their results in along with textual elaborations, so read on for their impressions and find out who the winners are! Click here to download the PDF with the competition results.
And now, in the words of the judges themselves and the Golly±Bossy Hostel team:
Here we are, the day has come and nobody is down for the count. The panel of judges loaded all submitted works onto one laptop, hooked it up to a projector, armed themselves with pencils, coffee, papers, cookies, eye drops, refreshments and ordered a pizza (ham’n’cheese, what else) and started reviewing while crammed into Studio UP’s premises.”
If you remember correctly, our desire was to make young, aspiring, creative and wacky people send us some fun souvenirs or bollygossy items to serve both as a memento and to benefit each and every hostel visitor. We received 54 works and we’re thrilled that so many teams signed up to play with us. We got all sorts of stuff, some ideas and suggestions more workable than others, but all solutions were interesting. Some of them were so interesting we extended the awards and certain participants got honorable mentions as special recognition, to encourage them to continue working and creating, as they brought some really interesting stuff and ideas to the table. We’re sorry to say we received very few suggestions outside the set forms we requested within the competition. It’s like you didn’t have any inspiration to come up with anything new, aside from an anchor for flip-flops.
Let’s start with the special awards and honorable mentions.
The first of three equal honorable mentions goes to Ivo Matić for his work on page 5, as he managed to work in all the stuff that makes this hostel special into a single logo, in addition to yellow and black, there’s coffee, juice, a camera, a fish, sneakers, a parasol, a hedgehog, diamonds, a few vague smudges and even a lighted cigar. We liked Ivo’s intense illustration which infused the identity with a new visual energy thus showing a whole range of possibilities to interpret the logo in completely non-geometrical ways.
*HONORABLE MENTION: Ivo Matić – Souvenir illustration

The second of three equal recognitions (and we were surprised ourselves) went to Roko Kerovec for his Battery T-shirt, as Roko dismantled the logo and filled it up with new energy. An excellent, direct and very simple gag which, unfortunately isn’t graphically fully processed so we gave him an honorable mention mostly to encourage him to further continue creating.
* HONORABLE MENTION: Roko Kerovec – Battery T-shirt

The third of three equal recognitions went to Marina Mijatović and Petra Prgomet who brought to life one naked (golly – “goli” meaning naked in Croatian) and one barefoot (bossy – “bosi” denoting barefoot) and sent them on an unforgettable vacation at the homonymous hostel, from which they take home keepsakes portraying themselves. Cute. The illustrations are processed in high-quality and put together systematically, although at this point in golly+-bossy’s development stage still a bit too far removed from its basic identity.
* HONORABLE MENTION: Marina Mijatović & Petra Prgomet – Going to the beach

And now get ready for the real spectacle. Stuff that made the cut and is set for production!
The Brže Bolje team were a tad bit late submitting their application, but we gave them a pass, especially as they made what every real barbecue virtuoso needs in the summer: a grill and bevanda* apron (*a “Bevanda” is a type of homemade watered-down wine very popular in Split and throughout Croatia in general). Simply put, everyone here and their mother would wear it in the kitchen, while drinking bevanda’s and grabbing a grilled bite to eat, so cheers to that!
*AWARDED WORK: BržeBolje
(Marina Andrijašević, Luka Borčić /Studio Borčić/ & Ivan Dorotić) – GOOSHTI + BAZZE

Two awards go to foilstudio for their fill-in (or is it a feelin’) T-shirt and bag, which in addition to a saucy design have a fun English cloze test thing going on. This work most directly conveys our idea that everyone is welcome here to express themselves in the way that suits them best. The solution is graphically removed from the basic visual g+-b code but in a high-quality way – as our goal wasn’t to get facsimiles of existing templates but to explore free interpretations.
*AWARDED WORK: Foilstudio – FILL_IN

Two more awards go to kuna zlatica for their poghled oonootrah (an inside glance) tote and T-shirt, dubbed ‘maytza for sity’ as a terms of endearment (a Croatian/English wordplay denoting ‘T-shirt for the city’), displaying what a satiated person looks like on the inside and a bag which has an illustrated list of all the things you need for a day in Split during the summer. A work that very successfully brought something ‘new’ to the project’s identity through a series of illustrations that are an obvious quality-based addition, while maintaining the hostel’s basic visual identity.
* AWARDED WORK: Kuna zlatica – POGHLED OONOOTRAH

An award for their own item which wasn’t within the competition’s set forms goes to the bratović-bračun duo for their tattoo stickers, but not quite the type you’d find in bubble gum wrappers, rather the kind you stick on yourself while sunbathing and take them off when you get a tan. Indeed, way healthier and a lot less permanent than regular tattoos. Their presentation opens up a new competition for Best Photograph with the +- motif which you’ll have to shoot this summer. We’ll let you know when.
* AWARDED WORK: Roberta Bratović & Nina Bačun – + -

An award goes to Damira Kalajzić aka pixelmysmile, who already managed to share her retro 8bit jewelry line with people who spend their weekends at de*belli’s (The Fat Man’s Place) dancing and laughing. Her pixellization of the logotype opens up a world of possibilities of playing with and trying out new territories within the G+-B color system.
* AWARDED WORK: Damira Kalajžić – G*B PIXEL ACCESSOIRE

*Every selected work will be individually awarded with 1500 HRK, and the winners of honorable mentions get two nights for two persons at the Golly±Bossy Hostel.
That’s all folks. As we pulled an all-nighter to select the best of the best just for you, we’re going to hit the sack now. Thanks for participating, and to all of you who didn’t win anything, track us on Facebook, as we’ll be organizing another competition soon for some other stuff we’ll soon be needing for our hostel. Actually, why wait? If you have a good idea, send it to us, and we’ll see what we can do with it.
Our desire is to incorporate as many people as possible to join us in creating souvenirs, postcards and the kind of tourist offer that Split and Croatia deserve. Nothing pompous, no bad service and boring designs, but something smart, colorful, young and witty. For people who roam the world goli (naked), bosi (barefoot) but with their eyes, hearts and minds wide open. See you soon!
