New Assets to Croatian Product Design?

Following the extraordinary success of last year’s design competition for pillowed furniture, whose winning works 3angle and Revolve became a frequent “guest” of our website, the Kvadra company, internationally acclaimed – reaching an almost iconic national status, have released their second competition a few months ago, which has just closed.

The second competition happened in a relatively short time span after the first, following the company’s well-thought-out strategy and projects that in a non-product Croatia not only invest in industrial manufacturing but also maintain a contemplative approach towards high-quality design, which is crucial for the profession.

Check out the results of the competition as well as comments of selected works by the panel of judges.

The panel of judges, Nikola Radeljković as president, along with other panel members: Filip Despot, Saša Begović, Tomislav Knezović and Sanja Knezović, at their first session held June 5, 2012, unanimously evaluated the Competition a success upon reviewing all works, as numerous innovative works were submitted. Of course, some better than others, leaping ahead with their concept, design and technical solutions thus completely meeting the criteria listed in the tender invitation such as ergonomic design, technical realization and market profitability.

The panel of judges thus invited the 10 selected authors for an oral presentation and additional elaboration of their work concept and technical solutions on June 12, 2012. The 10 selected authors or author teams include Danko Radulović, Jakov Šrajer and Jelena Lukač Kirš, Marko Pavlović,  Krešimir Jelušić and Alan Tvico,  Nina Bačun, Ivan Klisurić and Ivona Martinuš (two works), Samel Ivanov,  Filip Gordon Frank, Ruđer Novak Mikulić and Ana Rimac.

Upon their second session, the evaluation panel granted the following awards:

First Prize code 034 – Lap  / Samel Ivanov

Second Prize code 018 – LIFT&Sit / Alan Tvico (associate Krešimir Jelušić)

While Third Prize was granted to the following works:

Work under code 007 – Hex / Jakov Šrajer, Jelena Lukač Kirš

Work under code 015 – Swing / Marko Pavlović

Work under code 026 – Two/Fold  / Nina Bačun, Ivan Klisurić, Ivona Martinuš

Work under code 037 – Kubo / Filip Gordon Frank

The panel of judges unanimously voted that the winning work entirely meets the criteria with its level of quality concept, technical execution and ergonomic design with an emphasis on creativity and innovativeness, design and aesthetics, as well as its technical execution.

The runner –up also meets all the necessary requirements, but additional technical investments are needed.

The four third-place winners have been singled out due to their quality of concept, innovativeness of product, and design/aesthetical solution, even though they don’t entirely meet the criteria for ergonomic conditions as well as technical execution. The panel of judges gave a special commendation to the work under code 005 – Sedy Lezy /Danko Radulović for the conceptual design and simplicity of the product, technical execution and realized prototype.

AWARDS:

Work under code 034 – Lap  / Samel Ivanov – 1st Prize

The work is completely in line with the competition’s theme in terms of function and design. The project is designed and well-thought-out, while the author corrected all mistakes the panel of judges brought to his attention in the first evaluation cycle. The suggested solution is transformable and modular, simple for execution and use and represents a qualitative shift within the typology.

Work under code 018 – LIFT&Sit / Alan Tvico (associate Krešimir Jelušić) – 2nd Prize

The project is exceptionally well-presented while the design and harmonization of all visual elements are carried out adequately and precisely. Even though the work isn’t completely in line with the competition theme, it’s very demanding technically, and the panel of judges decided to honor this innovativeness and visual excellence.

Work under code 007 – Hex / Jakov Šrajer, Jelena Lukač Kirš – 3rd Prize

The project is exceptionally well-presented while the design and harmonization of all visual elements are carried out adequately and precisely. Even though the work isn’t completely in line with the competition theme, it’s very demanding technically, and the panel of judges decided to honor this innovativeness and visual excellence.

Work under code 007 – Hex / Jakov Šrajer, Jelena Lukač Kirš – 3rd Prize

The concept of folding is innovative and intelligent, while the design articulation remains excellent. The geometry has unfortunately determined the ergonomic deficiency that wasn’t able to be solved even in the development stage.

Work under the code 015 – Swing / Marko Pavlović – 3rd Prize

Although based on existent typology, the project is radical and recognizable in its visual identity and details. The solutions provided present a big design potential, as well as significant technical difficulties which deem the realization of the project questionable.

Work under code 037 – Kubo / Filip Gordon Frank – 3rd Prize

The author provides an intelligent and innovative solution of overlapping that’s both functionally and technically feasible. The work didn’t enter the competition for first prize due to its design which isn’t in line with the originality of the mechanism solution.
